Break Coupling design prior to 1972 head casting build dates consist of a 2-piece Brass interlocking Coupling that threads onto matting thread ends of the upper and lower stem. During the production year 1972 the break coupling was changed to a thread-less 1-piece Steel Break Coupling that connects to thread-less end upper and lower operating rods with hole locations for clevis and cotter pin coupling.

This change in break coupling design also reflected a change in the Upper and Lower Stem build. When ordering a Hydrant Extension make sure you are ordering the correct version Extension Stem.

	If you have a Mueller Hydrant Extension Casting but have lost the seperate carton that contained all the gaskets, extension Rod, etc, we offer a EXTENSION SUB-KIT that contains all pieces for a extension installation LESS The Barrel Extension Casting.

	Sometimes the Extension ROD gets lost however you still have the carton with the gaskets, flanges, etc. We offer these Stems complete with the special lower stem extension coupling attached.

			The process of adding a extension to a fire hydrant requires the removal of the bonnet and upper barrel assemblies. Refer to the Improved Hydrant Extension Maintenance Link for those procedures and special tools required.
