	The Mueller IMPROVED Series of fire hydrants were produced from 1934 through 1980 in the Chattanooga, Tennessee foundry.


		Improved hydrants have a "Break Flange" at ground line

	Identify your IMPROVED type: All Mueller IMPROVED hydrants are easily identified by observing the Upper Barrel cast markings for the following information: Valve Opening Sizes Produced: 4-1/4", 4-1/2" 5-1/4" or 6-1/4 [cast on barrel] Year Of Hydrant Build: Can be 1934 to 1980.


		The Mueller IMPROVED hydrant illustrated above has a Main Valve Opening Size of 4-1/2" with the Year Of Build as 1974.

	SPECIAL NOTE CONCERNING CASTING MARKING(s)

This pertains to identifying the correct Valve Opening Size on Mueller
IMPROVED series with 4.25 or 4.50 only.

The upper barrel casting is cast with BOTH 4-1/4" AND 4-1/2" as illustrated in the picture to the left. Before the complete hydrant is sent out, the factory was supposed to grind off either the 1/4" or the 1/2" casting depending on the true Seat Ring size furnished.

In the case of this particular hydrant picture, the 1/4 was partially ground off - but not completely as it should have been. This hydrant valve opening size is in-fact a 4-1/2" and NOT a 4-1/4".

Main Valve Opening Sizes Produced: 4-1/4" , 4-1/2", 5-1/4", and 6-1/4"
Nozzle Styles Produced: 3-Way, 2-Way
Brass Nozzles Are Caulked Into Hydrant Head Casting.
Pumper Nozzle Is At A Lower Plane Than The Hose Nozzles.
Break Coupling design prior to 1972 consisted of a 2-piece Brass Coupling that interlocked and held in place with a set screw. During the production year 1972 the break coupling was changed to a 1-piece Steel coupling with clevis and cotter pins. This change also reflected a change in the Upper and Lower Stem build.
